published “TheBestOldFlagonEarth”
forpianoandvoice.Thiswas anearly
exampleof a spateof popularpatriotic
war songs sungacross thecountry.The
titles reflect thehome-boundviewof
thewar and theemergingCanadian
senseof identity, including “Boys from
Canada,” “Canada, Fall In!,” and “The
Hearts of theWorldLoveCanada.”
What no one could miss was
the road they had journeyed. By
the time most of the troops had
returned home in early 1919
the province had been at war
for four and a half years. New
Brunswickers had experienced
both the triumph of victory and
the tragedyof loss and sacrifice.
