An exciting afternoon at the Moncton Sistema NB Centre on Wednesday, December 7th as we welcomed the children from the new centre in Hillsborough. Twenty-four children ages 6 to 8 were able to join Moncton students for a violin lesson taught by Hillsborough Centre Director Sara Liptay.
“This was an excellent opportunity for our young people to see in bigger terms where their practice can take them,” says Liptay, whose centre has been open since September. “Learning with the Moncton students was a lot of fun and was inspirational to our kids.”
Hillsborough Elementary School Principal Susan Wilmot also accompanied students on the 30-minute drive from the community.
“I am so proud of what we have been able to offer so many of our kids through the Sistema NB program,” she says. “Sistema NB is having such a positive impact. It’s also been wonderful that we are able bring them to Moncton to see what others are doing encourages our kids even more.”
It is not just the school that is noticing the impact that the program is having on their kids. Mom Rachel Steeves says her son Kurt is absolutely loving the program. Demand for the program has been high and when he got accepted, he was so excited.
“He is fascinated with all the sounds he is able to make on the violin,” says Steeves. “Even in this short time, I see a difference in him. Not only is he learning music, but this is good for his confidence and self-esteem.”
A full house of budding talent! Hillsborough Sistema NB centre director Sara Liptay instructs her students and Moncton Sistema NB students.
The Hillsborough Sistema NB Centre is one of two centres that has opened its doors this year. Elsipogtog First Nation also began offering the program in November, making a total of eight Sistema NB centres that now teach music to nearly one thousand school-aged children across the province.
