The New Brunswick Youth Orchestra played a free outdoor concert in downtown Moncton Friday, with its most talented students getting a chance to show off their hard work.

“This is the time of year that we select the most advanced kids and give them a chance to play together,” said Tony Delgado, music director for NBYO. “It’s a huge opportunity for them.”

The show featured three orchestras, with two of them made up of youths aged 10 and up, and the other being a mix of young members and their instructors.

The three groups, which consisted of about 300 musicians, played a wide variety of pieces, including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. Delagdo, who was in the audience, says it is always impressive to hear his young musicians play.

“This is not easy stuff to play,”says Delgado, who works with more than 800 youth orchestral members from across the province.“This is original music. This what the professionals play.”

Friday’s concert also featured Coastal Sound, a visiting youth choir from Vancouver, and Jeunes chanteurs d’Acadie, a francophone choir from Moncton which just returned from a trip to Vancouver.

Moncton country band,The Divorcees, also joined the classical musicians to help round out the four-hour show.

The outdoor concert was part of the 2016 Atlantic Nationals auto show, which took over Main Street until late Friday evening with its annual downtown “Cruise-In.”

A second concert Friday night featured Canadian rocker Kim Mitchell, who performed along with New Brunswick artists The Carey Beck Trio and Mike Bravener.
