After successful performances of The Sound of Music and Oliver!, the Capitol Theatre and Tutta Musica will again join forces this winter to stage the musical Mary Poppins.

The classic story of the magical nanny will run from February 24 to March 4, with tickets going on sale later this fall.

The production will be directed by Marshall Button, with musical direction by Antonio Delgado. To audition, experienced singers, dancers and actors can submit a photo and resume to melannie.eldridge@capitol.nb.ca.Button said there’s no set deadline for applications, though casting is expected to be complete by the end of November.

“It’s a great show - most of the time when something is so popular, there’s a reason,” Button said about the decision to put on the show.

Classic songs include “A Spoonful of Sugar”, “Chim Chim Cheree”, “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”.

Mary Poppins was originally featured in a series of children’s books by P.L Travers, first published in 1934, and was turned into a movie by Disney in 1964. A theatrical version of Mary Poppins, produced by Cameron Mackintosh, debuted in England in 2004.

“We will once again be using our video wall equipment and intend to use mind-blowing special effects for this show,” said Kim Rayworth, managing director of the Capitol Theatre.

Button said the show will present new, physical challenges to put on.

“If it all goes according to plan, we’ll have people flying and I don’t know that anybody has ever mounted a show locally with that level of aeronautic indoor features,” Button said. “That was something we really wanted to implement.”

Tutta Musica features the professional teaching musicians of the New Brunswick Sistema program.
