The gift of music travelling around the world.
There is a special twinkle in a student’s eye when they find out that there are other children playing in orchestras all across New Brunswick. All of a sudden they realize that they are part of an even bigger community. There are hundreds of other kids doing exactly what they do, every day.
What’s really cool though, is when they find out that there are Sistema programs all over the world and that they are part of an even bigger global community. In reality, there are thousands of other children who are working hard to master their instruments, just like them. How motivating is that!
While planning an upcoming trip to India (her second passion after music being travelling) teaching artist at Sistema NB, Richibucto Centre, Nicole MacDonald, brainstormed ways to get her students involved and the Musical Postcard was born. Her students would record a video of themselves playing and would send it to India as a musical gift. It would be delivered to the Sistema Inspired Program there called Child’s Play and the Indian students would reply with their own gift of music.
Not only was this a big motivator to practice (people on the other side of the world are going to listen to them play!) but it’s also a great way to learn a bit about geography, to open a conversation about different cultures and to foster a sense of belonging to the global community.
Now our Musical Postcards are available for everyone to enjoy. If you’re from another Sistema Inspired Program why not send us your own musical postcard? We’ll ‘write’ back!
