New Brunswick Youth Orchestra, Moncton Youth Orchestra, and Sistema NB members are being treated to a series of extraordinary workshops and master classes in Moncton, Richibucto, Sackville, and Saint John from November 25th to November 29th. National Arts Centre Orchestra veterans Douglas and Nancy Sturdevant returned to New Brunswick this week to engage with NBYO and Sistema NB, sharing their world-class musicianship with youth orchestra members as young as 6 years of age.
Nancy Sturdevant joined the National Arts Centre Orchestra in 1979. A student of Professor Francis Bundra at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), Nancy achieved a BMusEd (1968), and a MM (1969 Honours). Additional studies were completed at the Aspen Festival and the Mazareteum in Salzburg, Austria. Prior to moving to Ottawa she performed with the Princeton Chamber Orchestra, the Bach Aria Group of New York City, and the Toledo Symphony Orchestra in Ohio.
Douglas (Pace) Sturdevant graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy and the University of Michigan and began his professional orchestral career with the Toledo (Ohio) Symphony Orchestra, becoming Principal Trumpet at the young age of 22. In 1975 he was appointed Principal Trumpet of Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra, a position he held for 23 years. He was often featured as soloist with the Orchestra, both in Ottawa and on its national tours, and with noted conductors such as Pinchas Zukerman, Trevor Pinnock, Mario Bernardi, Roger Norrington, Helmut Rilling, Alexander Schneider, Eduoardo Mata and Charles Dutoit. Pace then became Manager of Arts Training and Outreach for NACO, he also serves as Director of Pedagogy with the Orchestre de la francophonie.
